The Golden Globes 2016.

Last Sunday, the first big award show of this heavy award season came on with a bang. I am talking about the Golden  Globes. I had not watched an entire award show from the beginning (red carpet arrivals too) till the end, in a few years. Award shows tend to run really long and at times can get boring. Well, I was happy with a lot of the nominees that won (especially with Leonardo DiCaprio and Sylvester Stallone who both got well-deserved standing ovations too) and did a "What?" "Huh?" with a couple of other winners (Lady Gaga, Rachel Bloom). The night was filled with beautiful fashions and of course there were some not-so-pretty dresses and gowns, too.

Trends we saw were romantic details like floaty dresses such as in chiffon, lace, see-through pieces, big romantic sleeves; puffy ball gowns; red - a big color this year too - from classic bright cherry red to more wine and maroon tones; jewel tones like bright blues, emerald, navy and mustard; prints - some ladies were not afraid to go for a floral print or another funky pattern; Grecian styles; cape sleeves and cape-like jackets built into dresses; big and long trains; plunging necklines, cut-outs and pockets; and last but not least white and gold - two other big colors this year, they are always two gorgeous neutrals that celebrities love to wear for a red carpet event. As far as designers, Marchesa had dressed a lot of stars for this big night and Marchesa's gowns are stunning. They are all art pieces. Choosing the following ladies for my best-dressed list was hard because there were a lot of pretty gowns but I picked my most favorites. I also had to include some so-so gowns which fall in the "on the fence" category for me and of course some that made the worst dressed list.

The Best Dressed:

Jennifer Lopez in Giambattista Valli
In my opinion, Jennifer Lopez was by far the best dressed at the Golden Globes this year. From the bold marigold color of this dress, to the thigh-high slit, gorgeous flowing train, cap sleeves and all her silver glittery accessories especially that bold wrap necklace, J.Lo looked amazing. Her hair and makeup looked divine too. This woman is a Red Carpet Maven. She almost never makes a worst dressed list.

Lily James in Marchesa

Viola Davis in Marchesa

Rounding up my top 3 we have Lily James (never heard of her before, to tell you the truth) and Viola Davis who is amazing at "How to Get  Away with Murder" by the way (and in my opinion should have won). Lily was one of several ladies that wore White and also wore another big trend of the night - a Grecian Style Gown. As a matter of fact there were a couple of other Grecian Style White Gowns on the red carpet. In my opinion hers was the best. It embraced her curves beautifully. It had a stunning floaty train and a beautiful intricate halter neckline. She looked like a soft marshmallow dream  in this gown. And I loved her simple hair but sultry makeup. She is a very pretty girl. Also on my top 3 best dressed is Shimmering Viola Davis. Viola is also wearing Marchesa. Her navy blue gown reminds me of a midnight sky filled with beautiful sparkly silver stars. The silver sparkles and stars all over the gown and those gorgeous see-through kimono sleeves make her gown one of a kind and truly beautiful. She was beaming!

The rest of the Best:

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Haute Couture

Amber Heard in Gucci

Jada Pinkett Smith in Atelier Versace

Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy

Amy Adams in Atelier Versace

Melissa Benoist in Monique Lhuiller

Julianne Moore in Tom Ford

Taylor Schilling in Thakoon

Eva Green in Elie Saab Haute Couture

America Ferrera in Jenny Packham

Corinne Fox in Pablo Sebastian

Sarah Hay in Marchesa

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior

Saoirse Ronan in Yves Saint Laurent Couture

Kate Bosworth in Dolce & Gabanna

Jena Dewan in Zuhair Murad

Brie Larson in Calvin Klein

Natalie Dormer in J. Mendel

Jaime Alexander in Genny

On the Fence:
Lady Gaga in Atelier Versace
While I do appreciate a more mature, toned-down, elegant Lady Gaga (she has been dressing classier and more lady-like in the last year), I think this beautiful and elegant black gown and the Marilyn Monroe hairdo age her. It is a nice dress, quite classic and elegant actually but I think it is suited for someone over the age of 45. Lady Gaga won Best Actress for a mini-series, for her role on "American Horror Story" - a show I have heard great things about. Are you watching it?

Similar with Lady Gaga, I wasn't quite feeling the Emerald Gown worn by Winner Rachel Bloom (Best Actress for a TV Comedy). Actually, style-wise the dress is similar to Lady Gaga's. Once again, it is an elegant dress and the rich green shade is gorgeous but between the flippy short hairdo and the style of the gown, it makes Rachel Bloom look at least 35 if not about 40. And IRL she is only 28 and also only 5.3". This was too much gown for a petite lady. Also, I thought the gown was very tight on her boobs and showed too much cleavage.

The Worst Dressed:

Regina King in Krikor Jabotian
Oh Regina - great actress, terrible style. While I do appreciate a good sparkle and of course some gold sequins, this gown had too many sequins (head to toe) and the floral patterns created by them makes the dress look like it was made with all the tinsel and broken ornaments left over from Christmas. Also the added white train/cape in the back looks like it is part of a second dress. Her stilettos are sexy but they are too busy for such a bold dress. In my opinion, she was the worst-dressed of the night.

Emilia Clarke in Valentino Haute Couture
I know this is supposed to be couture and the skirt part is quite beautiful and intricate, plus it has those on-trend cape sleeves but all this fabric in this style in all black nevertheless makes it like a Mortician Couture Dress. This is too much dress for such a pretty, young and tiny actress. It is also matronly and looks costumey. It is great to wear for the opera and it makes a great period piece, but to the Golden Globes - no, just no!

Kate Hudson in Michael Kors Collection
Oh Kate, what happened? She is wearing a mermaid skirt with a bandeau top that totally squeezes her boobs and she is small-chested to begin with. I actually like the material and the rose gold color of this Outfit but it would have worked if it was a normal crop top (which shows a sliver of skin) and if the top had short, 3/4 or long sleeves. The bra-looking top and skirt topped with Kate's skin color and all the skin she is showing in this outfit, washes her out completely and I hate that choker scarf thingy around her neck. As soon as I saw her walk the stage when she presented one of the prizes, I absolutely hated how she looked. And is that morning-after-sex hair?

Who were some of your favorite looks/best dressed ladies at the Golden Globes? Which dress did you hate?

I have a special post tomorrow showing some fun Outwear and Winter Accessories (with a pretty jewelry piece) and then I have a very special and personal post on Tuesday, so stay tuned. Thank you.

  4. I couldn't agree more with your bests and worsts! I watched the Golden Globes with my husband's grandma and she went nuts over Jamie Alexander's green dress because it was too revealing. It was fun to hear her perspective on things! I hope you had a great weekend Ada!
